Trip Report

Sourdough Mountain — Sunday, Oct. 23, 2022

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20

There are a few down trees across the trail, but easy to get over them.  We hit some snow at around 5k feet.   We decided to head towards Sourdough Peak to summit and ran into a wolverine.  It decided to chase us for 1/4 mile until we ran into two other hikers, and then it decided that it was outnumbered and decided to move on.   Please be careful!    There is snow at the lookout now, some slippery spots on the way down.  Temperature was cold at the lookout, so dress accordingly.

That is so scary! Was it like rushing at you guys or just following you? I’m glad you ran into other people and everyone was ok!

Yes, it was charging at us. Just be careful if you are planning on going up to Sourdough summit.

First the Bolt Creek fire and then a wolverine. I need to check with you every week where you are headed and avoid going there...lol j/k. I am glad you are safe. Thanks for the trip report and the video!

Whoa. That's intense. If you're inclined to share, this might be useful for North Cascades National Park or the Dept of Fish and Wildlife to know about as well. They are always keen on knowing about wildlife observations/interactions: https://www.wta.org/news/signpost/wildlife-observations-help-scientists-conservation

Did you go to the lookout then to the summit? Looking to get beta around Trail to the summit as most reports are just to the lookout. Thank you in advance!!

We went to the summit first then over to the lookout. When you start heading up on the last climb, you will see the trail split. To the left is towards the summit, to the right is to the lookout. When we did it there was an obvious trail to the summit, but with the recent snowfall it might be hard to see. This will somewhat point you in the right direction. The route will get you very close to the summit of Sourdough. https://www.summitpost.org/stetattle-ridge/695049
