This is the third time I have hiked this trail. My husband, dog and I do the hike around the same time every year, and it's fascinating to see how it changes each year. The best part of the hike isn't the actual trail but the part of the lake that reveals massive tree stumps; however this is only an option when the water is low. We got lucky and found the water to be super low for this year's hike, so there was plenty to explore. The stumps looks particularly beautiful with the fall leaves and light snow. Be mindful of private property as you venture to the stumps. Also, be aware that the area around the stumps might be incredibly muddy. The trail itself is beautiful with partial views of the water for the first portion. We've never done the entire trail; we just go as far as we want (and our dog can comfortably do) and then turn around. There are a handful of moderately steep or rocky sections that most people shouldn't find challenging, but with a senior dog, we have to be careful. The gravel road to the trailhead still has lots of potholes but is much improved since our visit last year. Honestly, this is one of my favorite hikes in the Olympics.
