Trip Report

Artist Point Snowshoe — Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2023

North Cascades > Mount Baker Area
Northern Lights and Mount Shuskin

Had an amazing overnight at Artist Point and learned a lot about snow camping…

First, pack is heavier than summer due to extra gear.

Second, everything freezes.  Frozen boots were impossible to put on in the morning.  Next time I’m dropping hand warmers in them or placing in a dry bag at the bottom of my sleeping bag.  Same plan for water bottles.

Batteries go faster in the cold and lighters are useless unless kept warm in pocket.

Two pads made huge difference.  Changing a into dry base layer was helpful.

oh yeah, trip report… insane alpenglow, clear star filled skies and quiet 360 degree views all night long.

Not easy to carry weight in snowshoes, not easy to deal with cold but reading up and buying a little gear helps.  Tent without mesh and good sleeping bag very helpful.  Relatively short hike and one bar of cell service certainly reduced risk.

Good morning Mount Baker
Goodnight N Cascades
Stars everywhere

Frozen boots is a new one, good to know! I've been toying with little add-ons to make a 3season system into winter, and agree 2 pads is far better than a way heavier much more $$ winter pad. Also trying mylar lining things & a 1st rough try did fine at 13F overnight (only 18 in the tweaked tent).

Amazing photos, thanks for sharing! Wish my phone or camera could do long-exposures for those night shots so I'm greatly appreciating yours.

Question- Do you know how cold it got over the night for you?

Camera photos

It was about 14 at night. As for phone the newer iPhone and Samsung can both do night mode. There are also a few night photo apps so all you need is a $15 phone tripod and maybe an app

Phone Apps

Night Cap or Slow Shutter are two apps I’ve downloaded in the past.

Thanks for the temp details. Camping up there is on my list now, when it's not actively snowing. And super thanks for app ideas. I also hear the Pixel phone is good for long exposure. I'm gonna hang onto my sturdy 2-yr-old Samsung a while longer & get full $'s worth but I do have a simple tripod. Time to hunt for night-blooming plants to fawn over. Time lapse features with plants would occupy me way too much, so I resist looking for that.
