Marymoor Park — Saturday, Mar. 18, 2023

Puget Sound and Islands > Seattle-Tacoma Area

Had a couple spare hours between chores this morning and walked a messy lollipop loop around Marymoor, etc Saturday morning in the sunshine.  We parked at the lot along the Eastlake Sammamish trail (behind Wholefoods) which is free and had plenty of open spots then simply walked down the trail to the connector trail with Marymoor a half mile south.  There is pay lot parking in Marymoor as well though it was quite busy today with the dog park and other activities going on in the park.  Restrooms are open in Marymoor and there is a single portapotti at the northern East Lake Sammamish trail lot.

Marymoor can get quite busy but if you stay toward the edges it is quieter and more pleasant.  The Audubon bird trail is very nice and the boardwalks have been recently maintained and are in good shape.  Water level through the area is low enough so it never comes up over the walks currently.  Don’t miss the big Heron rookery - it actually is in the middle of the big dog park so you will need to risk getting some paw prints on your pants but it is completely worth it.  I counted at least 55 separate nests currently and at least a 100 individual birds today.

Great shots! We have a heron rookery right across the street from our new house in Bellingham. It's been great watching them.

Thank you for your report and great photos which led us to go to the park today for the first time! It was fun to be able to walk so close to the rookery. We had recently viewed the heron rookery seen from the Leque Island Unit of the Skagit Wildlife Area. There were in active breeding behavior and it would have been so fun to have been able to view them "up close and personal" as you can do at the Marymoor Rookery.
