Ginkgo Petrified Forest Interpretive Trails — Friday, Apr. 14, 2023

Central Washington > Potholes Region
Woollypod milkvetch

Just getting home from the East side area today and wanted to submit a report on the Ginkgo Petrified Forest hikes we did on Friday the 14th.  We've passed this area many times and have never stopped.  With the rain in Western WA, we decided this was the time to travel to the "sunny side". We stopped at Wanapum State Park and grabbed a nice site along the river.  Then headed to the TH mid afternoon.

Parking lot was nearly empty, maybe 2 cars.  Clear ish skies and temps about 50 degrees.  The privy was clean and stocked with paper.  Headed up the trail pass the informative museum, and went to the right.  A little windy but not too bad.  Had a nice view down to the Columbia.  Many flowers starting to bloom including Hooker's Balsamroot, Woollypod Milkvetch and Phlox.  No sightings of wildlife, unfortunately.

Only passed 2 other people on the trail and had no trouble finding all the petrified trees.  We were quite surprised to see the variety of trees that once covered this area.

Nice quick hike to stretch the legs after sitting awhile.  Glad we stopped to check the area out.
