Cutthroat Pass via the Pacific Crest Trail — Sunday, Jun. 4, 2023

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
Looking south-ish from the pass

The road in to the TH from highway 20 still has a drift in front of it, so plan on an extra ~.3 miles.

The trail is in great shape up until entering the basin around 6000ft. In running shoes I was able to rock-hop across all the streams without getting my feet too wet.

Intermittent snow started after crossing Porcupine Creek, but the trail was easily to follow.

After entering the basin below the pass it was virtually all snow. I mostly lost the trail and just booted straight up the snow slopes. It was soft enough to kick good steps even in running shoes, but hiking boots would have been more pleasant. Comfort in navigating and traveling on snow would probably be helpful for the current conditions until it melts out a little more.

Nobody else on this side of the trail today, but another group had come up from the Cutthroat Lake side.
