The road is dirt, in good condition, but for further than the locals who recommended the hike seemed to indicate. Just be prepared for a 15 to 20 minute one way drive from 101 to get to the trail.
That said, the falls are much bigger and nicer than I expected, and the trail usd in excellent condition. After dinner on a weekday we had the entire trail to ourselves. We also passed through a large herd of elk on the way in.
A great, short trail.
