North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
Hidden Lake Lookout by ecVer

We arrived at the trailhead at 7:50AM and found the upper lot to be full upon our arrival. Given the weather (bluebird day) we weren't too surprised. The road isn't as bad as I had expected given the other trip reports. There is one section of serious ruts just past the last bend before the end of the road, but this section is short and the road is easy the rest of the way beyond that small section. Any high-clearance subaru or similar could make it to the top with careful maneuvering. We had no issues and drove straight through in our truck.

The trail is in great condition and completely melted out until just before the pass. There is a small snow field here that you climb, but it's also easy enough to traverse the rocks to the climber's left if you aren't interested in traveling up the snow. No need to get your shoes wet on any creek crossings as they are all manageable.

This trail is incredibly exposed in the midday to afternoon sun, so I would highly recommend an early start. We made it through most of the elevation gain before the sun came over the ridge and would only hike it again under similar conditions. We saw at least a dozen small groups of backpackers looking for campsites before the pass since you need a permit once you cross the park boundary. There did not seem to be enough spaces to accommodate everyone headed up there on a sunny weekend, so be warned and go mid-week if possible.

Wildflowers appear to be at peak. Now is a great time to go!
