The Enchantments — Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023

Central Cascades > Leavenworth Area
At the top of Asgard Pass

The trail starts relatively easy, going through wooded area until you get round the far side Colchuck Lake. Climbing up the pass took us a little over an hour; it's a challenge, but it's not too bad if you move slow and steady.

Walking through the Core Zone was stunning, the otherworldly-looking peaks and crystalline alpine lakes provided plenty of eye-candy throughout. Not to mention, we saw about 20 mountain goats.

Despite the trail's popularity, it was in great condition. I didn't see any trash, the cairns were plentiful, and everyone we spoke with was very pleasant and respectful.

Once we left the Core Zone, it was a long way down back to the Snow Lakes Trailhead. Walking down large steps on granite was knee-shatteringly painful. By the time we passed Snow Lakes, our feet, knees, and hips were ready to give out. I'm not sure how people are calculating the mileage on this trail. WTA says 18 miles, Gaia GPS says 17.8 — for us, it was closer to ~19. So when you think you're near the end, just know there's still a bit more left to go.

Having gone through the Core Zone of the Enchantments, it's easy to see how this trail earned its name. And once you start descending nearly 7,000 ft from its peak elevation, it's easy to understand how it earned its reputation as a grueling one-day challenge. The length and elevation gain may look daunting enough, but I found the elevation loss of 6,800 ft much more of a challenge.

Bring plenty of water (3.5L was enough for me), a water filter, sun protection, an extra pair of socks, and your trekking poles — have a great time!
