Kukutali Preserve — Friday, Jan. 26, 2024

Puget Sound and Islands > Bellingham Area
Flagstaff Point From the Western Tombolo

We were looking for some dryer weather, at least before late afternoon, and it was found at Kukutali. We arrived at a little before the low tide so could be assured of a dry tombolo crossing on the way back. The east end of Kekit Island is the lowest part of the tombolo and there was evidence of driftwood jam there that had been removed recently. We took the North Trail going in and the Kekit (middle) Trail for our return. Even at low tide there is not much beach area to walk on but it still makes for an interesting hike. The North Trail through the forest of mostly cedar, Douglas fir and madrone is the most interesting of the three island trails any time of the year.

No big bird sightings at Kukutali today but we saw at least ten bald eagles and herons on the drive there.

We didn't check the restroom at the picnic area on the island but the one at the parking lot is open and well stocked.
