Big Four Ice Caves Snowshoe — Saturday, Feb. 17, 2024

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway

Arrived at the gate closure at 10:30am.  We swung around and parked on the westbound shoulder.  We were the 4th car.  When we returned at 1:30pm there were 34 cars parked.

The road walk was simple and snow free, it was around 2 miles to the picnic area.  The trailhead is maybe a 1/4 mile further from the "picnic area sign."  On the actual trail (towards the ice caves) we crossed paths with the other 3 parties. The wooden bridges/trail had intermittent snow/ice/slush the last 1/2 mile to the ice caves.  We brought microspikes and hiking poles but did not need to use them.  We hung out and had the area to ourselves for 30 minutes.  Then started our walk back.  GPS said 7.2 miles RT.
