I have avoided this trail due to its popularity, but did do some trail work on it a few years ago. So on this rainy day my son and I decided to go check it out and actually visit the falls. As someone else said on a recent trip report, always go to the trailhead! It was pouring rain until we turned off I-90 and it didn't rain again on our entire hike. What a gorgeous trail! A bit muddy - I suggest wearing waterproof boots so you can walk right through the mud rather than around it and further impacting the edges of the trail - but excellently maintained. Right now it feels very open and light without leaves on the trees. It's worth going to all the established lookouts - the bridge over the top of the falls and the trail to the right shortly before that. The latter one has a superbly frightening platform hanging over the edge and parallel to the falls. Continuing past the bridge takes you to another lookout of the upper falls, and a giant chunk of tree that has fallen over a bench. Even on this rainy cold day it was pretty crowded (though still room in the parking lot) so I recommend this hike for a weekday. Please pick up your trash and dog poop bags, and stay on the trail or this gem won't be so beautiful anymore. Photos to come later...
