Trailhead parking is the gravel area across from the Colonial Creek campground entrance. Good, clean flushing toilets at the campground. We started at about 10:15 am and there was only one other party hiking at that time. Trail starts along the creek and then starts gradually climbing with many switchbacks. Pretty easy though--we're not in great shape and did fine. The upper part of the trail is pretty open and exposed, not a lot of shade, so bring sunscreen and a hat. Next time I think we'll start even earlier to keep a little cooler on a sunny day. Good spots to eat your lunch and some nice views. The pup appreciated the cool creek at the bottom on the return. There were 3-4 other parties on their way up by the time we were on our return, and the lot was mostly full at that time too. I think we got back to the truck about 12:30 pm. Nice little hike on a gorgeous NW day.

We camped out and took advantage of the last no-services fee-free day of camping in the NCNP at the Colonial Creek Campground across the street from Thunder Knob, and got up at 4:30am in hopes of catching a sunrise. The clouds were too heavy for anything spectacular, but it was still a nice hike!

Hit the trail at 5:00am and was at the overlook by about 5:35am, hiking fast. The trail is in great shape, totally snow free, nothing to complain about! We did encounter a few bug swarms as we sat to eat breakfast at the overlook, but that's to be expected just about anywhere this time of year.

The view from Thunder Knob isn't much better (if any) than the view from the Hwy 20 overlook, but it's still a pretty trail and absolutely worth checking out.

Beware of: snow conditions

We decided on this as a quick snowshoe trip for the weekend. It was okay as a trip, but not great. Getting to the trail was easy. The road all the way to Diablo Lake and Colonial Creek campground is well plowed/sanded/salted. Barring a big snowstorm, getting there shouldn't be too hard. The hardest part about this trail was the beginning. As far as I can tell, you'll need to ford a small offshoot of Colonial Creek right away. It's not terrible for rock-hopping, but taking snowshoes on and off isn't super fun. That said, you'll definitely need snowshoes, even though there are a few parts of the trail that aren't fully covered with snow. After the first 300 yards or so, the trail becomes much easier to follow. If you go soon, you should be able to follow our tracks. Otherwise, it looks like the trail is pretty lightly trafficked. We saw a few snowed-in footprints, and not another soul the whole day on the trail. View at the top was nice but unspectacular. The whole hike took us a little under 3 hours with about half an hour at the top, and half an hour wandering around trying to find a place to cross the river.

Hiked this trail last Saturday with a group of 10 people and 2 dogs. From reading previous trip reports, we took note that the walking bridge in the beginning of the trail was down. Also there are signs posted at the trailhead that the bridge is down for the season. From others, we read that there is a log crossing if you walk through Colonial Creek Campground (closed for the season) and go to site #27. There are 2 crossable logs here. Once you cross, you walk through a mossy rock wash, and will reconnect with the trail, kind straight a head and a lil to the left. Besides that the trail is easy. The view at the top is great. When we went last Saturday there were not that many people on the trail.

We stopped for a short hike on a return from the Methow Valley to find the bridge(s) over Colonial Creek were out (looked more like washed out, than intentionally removed). Colonial Creek was running high enough to make a rock hop impossible. After brush bashing upstream, we found a good log crossing. The easiest way to reach the log crossing is to walk the road up to campsite 27. Go through the campsite and take the informal trail that is behind the fire ring. The log crossing (single log) is slightly downstream of where the informal trail meets the creek. After crossing the creek and climbing up on the far bank, turn downstream, going over a few large logs and follow the old, mossy, creek bed until reaching the trail. At that point, turn left and follow the great trail to the viewpoints of Diablo Lake
