Another beautiful day! We had originally intended to take the poor man's route up to the Oyster Dome from the Samish Overlook because it was my buddy's first hike of the spring. We found the road closed at the Blanchard Lower Trailhead. Sign said to expect delays Mon-Thur.

So we bit the bullet and drove around to Chuckanut Drive and went up that way. Not really anything to say that hasn't been said before. There is signage (new since last March to me, at least) that says the bat caves are closed. The views were okay from the dome. Don't think I'd make another special trip to come back (the first time I was up there it was in wind, clouds, and rain).

Afterwards we decided to pack on some miles so we headed east towards Lily Lake. Instead of taking Max's Shortcut as we had the first time we continued on and took the longer Lily-Lizard trail route to the Lily-Max connected, finally arriving the the empty parking lot where we'd originally intended to park, before headed down to Chuckanut Drive.

Nice day. Hot weather. Not a lot of people on the trail. Glad to be out of the snow.

The bugs and mudholes were only on the trail within a half mile either way of Lily Lake where all the standing water is.

I decided to take my life into my own hands and leave my wife on Mother's Day for hike 13 of 50 planned this year at age 50. I decided to hike Samish Lake Park Trails to the Overlook. I didn't leave the house until 10:30 am. I was looking for more sunshine but didn't get it so I headed out anyway. The weather was nice and there was some sunshine but none when I got to the overlook at the top. It was still a spectacular view. The trail was in great shape with a great view of the waterfalls draining into Samish Lake. Most of the trails in this park are up hill as the park is along the northwestern side of the lake. Great place for a day hike, picnic lauching small boats and kayaks in the lake as well as swimming. The trail did not have many people and I met one new friend on the trail who helped me quickly navigate to the overlook for some great views of the lake. All and all it was well worth the hike to the top. But most of all I was still on my wife's good side when I got back home so it turned out to be a great day!! Come check out this small park in Bellingham, Washington and Lake Samish. It is well worth the visit. Check out my youtube channel "lmm3181" with lots of videos of hikes I have done in Washington State and follow me on my journey as I try to hike 50 hikes at age 50 this year. Enjoy your hiking!!! Mike

You can't drive to Samish Overlook in the winter, but you can hike there on Chuckanut trails. This is a fine winter hike, especially when there is snow on the mountain. Roundtrip is just over six miles with 1,000 feet of elevation gain. My route started from the second of three trailheads on the access road off Barrel Springs Road. Take the Algier exit from I-5 North and turn left. Turn left again at the first road (Barrel Springs). Look for the trailhead road on the right in less than a mile. I took the Lizard/Lily Lake trail to the PNW Trail, which leads to the Overlook. An alternate shorter-but-steeper route is the PNW Trail from its trailhead at milemarker 10 on Chuckanut Drive off I-5. There were no blowdowns and only a few muddy spots on the trail where water was flowing. There was snow on the trail beginning at the second mile. I had traction devices and snowshoes, but neither were required. The views at the Overlook are great, especially with snow in the foreground. This was a good day for a hike, but I did not encounter anyone.

Samish Overlook via Blanchard Hill (PNT) Pacific Northwest Trails have done a lot of work on trails...

Samish Overlook via Blanchard Hill (PNT) Pacific Northwest Trails have done a lot of work on trails around Chuckanut Drive and Blanchard Hill. Everytime I've hiked in the area I've found more evidence of their efforts and it is now possible to string together a bunch of ""little"" hikes to create longer hikes.

I chose Samish Overlook because it was a nice day and I wanted a view without having to deal with snowshoes. Drive I-5 north and exit at Alger (exit 240). Go left over overpass and a short distance to Barrel Springs Road, turn left and take a right (west) onto a dirt road (1.5 miles from the freeway). It is signed Blanchard Hill. Drive to the lower trailhead (marked Lily & Lizard Lakes) at 1.6 miles or to the upper trailhead at another 1.6 miles. The trailhead is down the road a bit from the parking area. The trailhead at the upper end of the parking lot descends to the trailhead at the lower parking lot. The trail is mostly in forest and parallels Road B-2000 for about a half mile. There are few views out toward the water. At 1.5 miles reach a junction for the Samish Overlook trail and turn left and at 2.3 miles reach another junction (stay straight). Follow the trail through a rather muddy section and cross Road B-2000. Pick up the tread again as it heads toward the overlook. When conditions are right this a favorite spot for the hang-gliders but today they were sitting in the sun waiting for a breeze that never came. (You can also drive Road B-2000 to the overlook, but it's more fun to hike). There are views to the San Juans and several islands, Samish Island, Mount Constitution and if you walk a little further up the road you can get a look at Oyster Dome, another excellent winter hike. Some sections of the trail are signed PNT (Pacific North Trail) and from Samish Overlook there is a PNT trail that connects to Oyster Dome for those wishing a longer hike. Its about 5.5 miles round trip with less than 700 feet elevation gain, a hike just about anyone can do. For a shorter hike walk Road B-2000 back (turn left when you reach the access road) and walk a short distance back to the parking lot.

The trailhead is
on the Chuckanut Drive, just past mile post 10. If you reach the Oyster Bar Restaurant, you've gone too far. Monday was an extraordinarily beautiful day for the first of December. We started up the trail while the fog was still lifting. When we reached the first clearcut area, the view of the San Juan's emerging from the fog was mystical. The trail winds upward to a junction, left to the Bat Caves, Oyster Dome, etc., and right to the Samish Overlook. We went right, and continued upwards. At 2.3 miles, you reach the overlook. The view from the top was truly spectacular. there was spectacular. The fog had lifted and the water was bright blue, all the islands were visible. It felt like a summer's day! We continued beyond the overlook a little over a mile to Max's Shortcut, but decided not to continue up it to Lily Lake since it was getting late. We never saw a soul, until on our descent, we passed one person. But then we looked up and saw over our heads, a brightly colored hanglider against the blue sky. A great climax to a wonderful hike!
