Hidden Lake Lookout — Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011

North Cascades > North Cascades Highway - Hwy 20
Hidden Lake remains hidden!
This was planned as a hike but we prepared for more. The drive to the trailhead took two hours and we were surprised to find the 4.7 mile dirt road (#1540)in good condition (few potholes). The trail through the forest is in good condition but there is quite a tangle of fallen trees on the trail between 3800-4000 feet, requiring circumnavigation. Once through the forest, snow starts right at the east fork crossing of Sibley creek. The snow is patchy as the trail climbs through brush along the steep slope. After about 5200' the route is all snow. We were heading to the lookout first but since our approach was higher than the trail, we decided to go to the Hidden Lake Peak summit first. It was a mostly sunny day with excellent views from the summit. From there we went down the south ridge and up to the lookout. The trail to the lookout is partly covered with very steep snow so an axe is required on the lookout slope as well as the steep west slope of Hidden Lake Peak. Lots of water (and bugs) along the route below 5000', as the excessive snow pack continutes to melt away. Recommend sturdy, water-proof boots and a mountain-axe. No traction devices needed unless traveling with cooler temperatures in the morning. Wildflowers are still not totally showing in their usual amounts seen normally this time of year. http://www.flickr.com/photos/nabuckley/sets/72157627364404260/
Plenty of snow still!
