Trip Report

Stegosaurus Butte — Sunday, Nov. 20, 2016

Snoqualmie Region > North Bend Area
Rainy and chilly at the MF Trailhead around 11am on Sunday where we found a few other parties. The forest on this one feels much like neighboring Rainy Lake trail. In fact the whole trail does. Has its share of blowdowns, steep sections, rooty holds and is very wet. The trail is pretty obvious, a left off of the Pratt River Trail from MF, about half way to Rainy Creek bridge, just around a bend. Had my girlfriend and dog with me today and figured we'd try a more challenging hike for her today. The trail is heavy with vegetation and shrubs but also a little cleared out in terms of trees. There are large boulder piles, but only one or two you end up hiking over. The start of the trail is quite muddy and slick. Significant Other slipped a few times and became very upset I was, "making her do this trail." My gentle encouragement only infuriated her more as she slid a bit on the mud. I used a stick to provide a railing she could climb up, but by the third slip her patience was lost. She decided to go wait in the car not far from the trailhead, and I said I'd be fast. Disappointed yes, but I understood. The rain and mud was hurting her morale a bit. Despite the partner troubles I thought the trail was a blast. So I pumped up to the top and wandered around taking pictures for a while. There are boot paths on the butte offering views of "The Pulpit", Preacher, Russian Butte and especially Garfield - OMG Garfield view is awesome here. Descent was pretty slippery and I saw other parties with poles, which would have been nice today. It's pretty short and somewhat steep and overall a great little training hike. Though, the terrain can be a little questionable, so don't go in expecting Mt. Si.

Infuriated SO

Pawpy,
I feel your pain. I can't tell you how many times I have dragged my wife on a questionable trail with the same response that you got. Of course, I always remember the trail as being in good shape when it really isn't. My dog Maddy however never complains! Maddy and I end up doing a lot of hiking together. I try to limit myself to civilized trails when my wife comes with. I'm not very bright so it took me about 30 years to figure this out (almost).

Good advice

Thanks and I should probably heed this advice now and save myself 30 years of remembering the arguments instead of the views! See you out there!

Marry the hiker!

My first wife was a reluctant hiker; my next and last wife waits up the trail for me, while I try to catch up: a much better situation! She just hiked seven out of the last nine days--and with a partial knee replacement! I have the excuse of being older and with a new knee and a new ankle. I've done 111 hikes so far this year but she has done far more. Hiking is a huge part of our relationship--since we both love to hike! And now married over forty years--and hiking tomorrow morning!

My first time up Stegosaurus:

My wife skipped it, as it had so little miles and vertical gain!

Thank you!

Thanks. We ended up calling off our engagement. I think you're right Nordique, and appreciate your story.
