This is a quick report on Mailbox Peak, ascending via Old Trail and descending via New Trail. I started late in the afternoon to avoid parking congestion and crowd on trail. This was my fifth time to scale Mailbox Peak, and it's a pure reminder of "no pain, no gain" hike for sure as always. Kudos to those who dedicated their time and effort to build the new trail. The route of the granite steps along the talus slope on the way to the summit is nicely done as well. Now you can enjoy fantastic views as you go!
Trail condition:
Old Trail/4,000' gain in 2.5 miles to summit....Trail is in good condition. There are some slightly wet spots here and there, but nothing to worry about. Trail gets very steep, no joke. Hiking poles will be your best friend. Pay attention to follow the diamond shaped trail markers so that you won't get lost, particularly at upper sections of the trail where tree roots are exposed.
New Trail/4,000' gain in 5 miles....Trail is wide and easy to follow. It climbs steadily with a series of long switchbacks, however. There are muddy spots and snow covered sections along the upper part of the trail, but they are not hard to cross. However, your feet may get wet in sneakers. It's a long journey/nearly 10 miles RT, so your legs and feet may feel it.
Bring enough water with you and stay hydrated as you go because this hike is quite a workout and it can be pretty warm when it's sunny (the last mile or so to the top is exposed and no shade). Be safe out there and happy hiking! ;)
