I been interested in hiking Silver Peak for sometime and never had the chance until today. I chose to bypass the steep hike up from Twin lakes today and jumped on the PCT going South at Windy Pass (Forest Service road #9070). By the way, this service road is rough so go slowly and you'll be fine. I was followed by a low clearance Honda that made it just fine, couldn't believe it. I always enjoy being on the PCT to chat with through hikers to exchange info and hear their stories. I met a few happy hiker groups today. This trail is ready to go for Summer hiking with the exception of just a few stubborn snow banks you can easily step over or circumnavigate. Bugs are there around swampy wet areas but not a persistent problem. About 1.5 miles from Windy pass on the PCT be vigilant and you will see on the right the small cairn marking the trail through low bushes to the saddle between Abiel and Silver Mountain (Peak). Abiel is to the left and Silver Right. I had a cool hike up with marine layer cover, bring layers as it can be cool and breezy at the top. Hiking through the beautiful scree field can be frustrating but not a problem today, choose your steps carefully and you'll be fine. Dogs may have a bit of trouble with this section. Plenty of room at the summit to view Washington State in all directions. I rate this hike a 9.5/10 with glorious wildflowers blooming with bumble bees buzzing about. Enjoy!
