Iceberg Point

A short loop hike to rock cliffs, with fantastic views out towards the Olympic Peninsula, and back toward other parts of Lopez. It is suitable for children, dogs on leash, and folks of all ages.

Highlights include: some gnarly, contorted trees for climbing; a warning light for ships on the rocks; views from the cliffs out to the Olympics; and some history. Iceberg Point used to be a reef net site, and locals could drive up to the site, and get fish off the boats right off shore.

Wildflowers are plentiful early summer and orca whales pass through off shore.

From the parking lot at Agate Beach County Park, walk uphill along the gravel road, past several houses. Look for the sign pointing to Iceberg Point high up on a telephone pole (with a handsaw pointing directions). Since you are walking through private property, be very respectful of these homes.
Driving Directions:

From the ferry terminal, follow Ferry Rd to Center Rd. Follow Center Rd. all the way to Mud Bay Rd, turn off of Mud Bay on Harbor Rd. and follow this road to the end. Park at a small lot at Agate Beach County Park.

We wandered along the headlands and cliffs, ( the longest public beach access on Lopez) along the bluff trail which hugs the cliffs. The white moss gardens, grassy meadows, rocks, and contorted trees are all beautiful. The area is large enough, and doesn't get a lot of hikers, so any other people are usually seen from a distance.
Views to the Olympics, and Vancouver Island. A peaceful spot to catch a sunset, mesmerized by the ribbon of light dancing across the water.
We spent the night, and left Lopez in time to catch the sunrise on the way to Orcas the next morning.

This is the longest shoreline hike on Lopez Island. The trail wanders along the bluffs and cliffs, with views to the Olympics, and from the end to Mt Baker. Glacier Peak and Mt Rainier were also visible when we went here on Friday. Wildflowers carpet the grassy meadows.
The whales can be seen from here... but not today....
Although a cousin who went out fishing in a small rowboat about 4:30 in the morning, not only saw the whales; but had them swimming near her boat. She was fishing in the channel between Lopez and Long Island, near Richardson.
Twisted trees grow at the edge of the meadows.

The otter family who hang out on Rabbit Island are always fun to watch. Two were rambling across the field, along with several big black, and grey rabbits. Rabbit Island is criss crossed with otter trails, and they are often swimming, and playing nearby. During our row around the island ( a wildlife santuary, )we saw several. a row a little further out, to where the seals hang out on the rocks ( they can be heard from the beach most anytime)
Point Colville has many twisted, contorted Ent trees, just waiting ....
lots of ladies slippers blooming, and wild potatoes (the blue flowered Camas) plus the smell of wild onions ....
Seals on the rocks off Shark Reef.....
We were lucky to see a brief glimpse of whales swimming off Point Colville, moving through in a hurry.... Iceberg Point is another spot whales can be seen from, beautiful place with or without the whales!!
Baby lambs in the fields... ahh and wild turkeys in the grass out towards Point Colville... guess the area has a couple of flocks of turkeys now..
Proof that there are indeed aliens among us,
Not bad for a relaxing weekend.

Turned out to be a really nice day, what does the weatherman know? Took the ferry from Anacortes to Lopez $36 bucks! 1st time to this site, had difficulty finding it. Got close and had to knock on doors to get help. Randy Macdonald, thank you! A short walk behind a 'no trespassing' sign, and we made it. Spent all day walking all over the peninsulas. Got some great pix. Was hoping to see Orcas, but no luck.

We wandered out to Lopez for the day. Three short
hikes to the beach near Richardson, Point Colville, and Iceberg Point.
We didn't see any other folks out hiking either trail. Way cool , we
did see a pod of Orcas swimming off the cliffs out at Iceberg. No
whale boats following the pod for once, usually everytime we are lucky
enough to see the whales, the whale boats, and the gawkers aren't far
behind.
