Getting youth outdoors
Is there a young person in your life interested in the outdoors? Do you know a high school student in need of community service hours? Are you looking for an excuse to get dirty, give back to the hiking community and share the experience with your family? If you answered yes to any of these questions then WTA is here to help.
Washington Trails Association will celebrate its fifth summer of Youth Volunteer Vacations this year. The youth program has grown tremendously over the last five years. This summer WTA has increased the number of youth trips and expanded to various locations across the state. High School students age 14-18 have the opportunity to choose to spend a week under blue skies in Eastern Washington, among dense forests in the scenic Cascade Mountains, admiring Mount St. Helens, listening to the ocean on the Long Beach Peninsula, or experiencing the amazing views from Mt. Baker.
This year WTA has also expanded the Advanced Volunteer Vacations for Youth program. For those with previous trail work experience, we are offering three unique backcountry trips ranging from easy to strenuous. Volunteers will backpack in to the work site, advance their trail maintenance and leadership skills while camping in a wilderness setting.
Participants will experience new challenges, learn new skills and meet new people. During the week volunteers will learn all about the world of building and maintaining hiking trails, experienced in a safe, teamwork oriented environment. WTA provides experienced crew leaders, a great project, some camping gear (tents and sleeping pads for front country trips) and all of the meals for the week.
WTA will be at Seattle REI March 1, from 11:00am-3:00pm to answer any questions you might have about Volunteer Vacations. We hope to see you there!
