Hiking Black River Riparian Forest and Springbrook Trail

The Black River Riparian Forest and Wetland hosts more than 50 species of birds in this habitat area. A bird-watcher's dream, it also provides a wonderful place to stretch your legs and enjoy a shot of nature within Renton's city limits.

After parking, take the sidewalk over the river and turn right onto a paved path and kiosk. The paved path curves downhill and right, to the left on the curve is a dirt footpath that takes off along the river. The grade is flat and the scenery fair.

While here, you'll likely see mallards, woodpeckers, and some of the blue herons that make up the largest flock in Washington. Part of the forest includes a trail on boardwalk, which helps keep hikers feet out of the muddy wetland area.

The Springbrook Trail continues out of the Black River Riparian Forest and Wetland south toward Southcenter, along the Black River/Lower Springbrook Creek.

Getting There

There are multiple access points to this small trail system.

Monster Rd SW Trailhead / Oakesdale Ave SW (Black River Riparian Forest)

From Seattle, head south on I-5. Take exit 157 and merge onto WA-900/Martin Luther King Jr. Way S. Continue for 1.8 miles, then turn right onto 68th Ave S. In 0.4 mile, the road becomes Monster Rd SW. The trailhead will be on your left in a half mile. There is parking for 4 cars here. There is additional parking for 6 cars across the street.

Naches Ave SW (BLACK RIVER RIPARIAN FOREST)

Follow the driving directions to the Monster Rd SW/Oakesdale Ave SW trailhead above, but continue past the trailhead for another 0.3 mile. Turn left onto SW 7th St. At the next intersection, turn left onto Naches Ave SW. The trailhead is at the end of the road. Parking is not allowed here, so you may be dropped off or picked up at this trailhead, or you can walk to this trailhead.

Oakesdale Ave SW / Black River (Springbrook Trail)

There is no parking here but there is easy public transit access here.

Take King County Metro route F Line to the Oakesdale Ave SW & Boeing Cag stop. Head north and cross the street to the east side of the street if necessary. Continue north for just another few hundred feet — the trail starts to your right. This side access trail brings you to the main trail in 0.1 mile.

Oakesdale Ave SW & SW 41st St (SPringbrook trail)

There is no good designated parking here for the trail aside from the IKEA parking lot, but there are multiple options for taking public transit.

Take King County Metro route 153 to the Lind Ave SW & SW 41st St stop, make sure you are on the north side of the street, then head west on SW 41st St one block. The trail heads north a few hundred feet east from the corner of the block.

You can also take route 906 to the SW 43rd St & Oakesdale Ave SW stop, head north on Oakesdale Ave SW one block, then cross the street.
