The 2018 Spokane County Parks acquisition of the 179-acre former “Flying L Ranch” dairy farm and subsequent development of connecting trails have greatly expanded the options within the greater Glenrose Unit (also known as “The Cliffs”) of the Dishman Hills Conservation Area.
Starting in the Ponderosa neighborhood in the south Spokane Valley, trail options include the 2.2-mile Flying L trail, which climbs from the parking area and traverses a Ponderosa pine forest before breaking out into an open hillside, flanked along its lower reaches by an old apple orchard and a small year-round stream.
Located on the right and just past the stream, the Inside Passage trail junction expands the trail options. Visitors can choose to remain on the Flying L trail, which eventually connects to the main Glenrose Trail, or turn north on the Inside Passage trail leading toward The Cliffs trail (named after the area itself). Since The Cliffs trail also connects to the main Glenrose Trail, it is additionally possible to hike a loop instead of an out-and-back.
The The Cliffs trail leading north from the Inside Passage and Glenrose intersection was formerly a lollipop loop with an impressive view overlooking the Spokane Valley, but — due to the recent Dishman Hills Conservancy acquisition of the Keystone Property, purchased in early 2025 — there is now a critical public corridor and trail connection with the Dishman Hills Natural Area. It is important to note that the trail corridor is narrow, with private property located on either side. Please respect adjacent private property owners by staying on trail. Additionally, the natural area is a hiker-only trail system (dogs are permitted on leash, but neither bikes nor horses are permitted within the natural area).
The area is perhaps best for its spring wildflower displays, although it is accessible year-round and has something beautiful to offer in all seasons. Additional trails are also on the horizon, as Spokane County Parks recently acquired a private parcel located between the Flying L Ranch and the Cliffs. A new connecting trail is expected by late 2025.
