Hiking Dragonfly Loop

This lollipop hike is mostly old service roads that are slowly returning to nature. The Beaverton Marsh Preserve is a larger area with meadows and ponds intermixed with rural farmland. The loop trail lays on mixed upland forest overlooking these marshes and meadows. During migratory seasons, this is a fabulous place to observe the flows of nature.

There are several smaller trails — the Nuthatch and Pintail trails — that branch off to viewpoints, but always return you to the main loop. Bring binoculars, take your time, soak in the island vibe.

Getting There

From the San Juan Island ferry terminal, proceed SW (uphill) on Spring St for 2 blocks. Turn right (NW) onto Second St S. Travel about 5 blocks and turn right (north) onto Tucker Ave. This road winds for almost 2.5 miles. At a righthand bend in the road, turn left (south) onto Halvorsen Rd. Follow this twisty road for a bit less than a mile, where it ends at the parking area.
