The Grey Rock Trail is a multi-use trail that meanders through a variety of forest types, including Ponderosa pine forests, dense Douglas-fir stands and subalpine fir and spruce forests. It is quite long, but a 3.5 mile long amble from the Tree Phones campground is a fulfilling walk with gorgeous views.
Starting from Tree Phones Campground, hike north on the Grey Rock Trail and hike about 3.5 miles to the crest of Whites Ridge, with a total elevation gain of about 1500 feet.
The trail begins in a fairly dense spruce/fir forest, but opens up as you proceed up the ridge. Eventually, it emerges into some burned areas and meadows, offering great view of the surrounding terrain and even the summit of Mount Adams or Mount Rainier on clear days.
