Jackson Beach Park is a small sandspit that angles west-southwest off the mainland just south of Friday Harbor. The park itself is a lovely place to throw down a blanket and hang with the kids. The tide comes and goes, birds and wildlife are constant companions, and the hum of neighbors walking their dogs and whatnot make for a pleasant atmosphere.
Walk down the beach a few hundred yards and then around the righthand side of the boathouse. Here the spit turns northward, closing in Argyle Lagoon. Though stinky at times, this lagoon is fantastic with wildlife. Birds, insects, and sea creatures along this spit will entertain any child for hours. If possible, time your walk along the spit for an outgoing tide. The lagoon empties into the ocean through a very narrow opening and it is quite dramatic.
Return the way you came, or switch sides on the spit and witness the changes!
