Hiking Miners Cabin

The westernmost end of this trail is from the Miner's Ridge trail as it climbs to Image Lake and the Miners Ridge Lookout. About 3.5 miles up Miner's Ridge, at a campsite with a pit toilet, the Miner's Cabin trail disappears off into the forest straight ahead, while the more commonly used Miner's Ridge trail proceeds uphill.

This section is used little and hard to follow even from the start. Plunging through deep forest, it is narrow and overgrown.

Hikers more often use Miner's Cabin to connect with Cloudy Pass from Image Lake. From the lake, Miner's Ridge trail takes hikers east along the mountainside, beneath Plummer Mountain, before switchbacking steeply down to meet up with the Miners Cabin Trail. From this point, it's a scant 1.5 miles to the trail's terminus at a junction with a creek and the Pacific Crest Trail. Along the way, hikers pass through three large wildflower meadows with fantastic views, interspersed by deep forest. You may even see some abandoned mining equipment (look for it at either end of the trail, not in the meadow).

The final fascination is the titular cabin. Crushed (likely by snow), it is still visible from the trail just before you arrive at the PCT junction. The artifacts here feel quite old, but the whole vibe is set askew by the presence of a metal folding chair in the wreckage, evidence that mining activity in these mountains is hardly ancient history.

WTA Pro Tip: Save a copy of our directions before you leave! App-based driving directions aren't always accurate and data connections may be unreliable as you drive to the trailhead.

Getting There

Use the Suiattle River Trailhead to access Miner's Car (it's a long hike to the trail — 10 miles along the Suiattle and then 3.8 miles up the Miner's Ridge trail to the junction).
