Hiking Mount Index

A summit in the Central Cascades that requires technical experience, gear, and route-finding abilities. There are three ways to access Mount Index: from the east side of the mountain, from the west via Mount Persis, or from the east via the Proctor Creek drainage. This last one is a long and challenging bushwhack.

If you are attempting the Persis - Index traverse, you will need a recreational permit from Weyerhauser. Find it under the North Cascades - Chelan section on their site.

WTA Pro Tip: Save a copy of our directions before you leave! App-based driving directions aren't always accurate and data connections may be unreliable as you drive to the trailhead.

Getting There

Head east on Highway 2 from Everett. 13 miles east of Sultan, turn right onto Mount Index Road. At the Y intersection veer right; the trailhead is a quarter-mile up this road. The pin on the map above is for this trailhead.

To get to the west side of Index, turn onto Forest Road 62 about 6 miles east of Gold Bar. At the first junction, stay left and stay right at the 2nd junction. Continue to a large washout at the head of Proctor Creek. This is a brushy route; expect a long day.
