This loop hike is about the journey through beautiful vegetation including some old forests — with the added bonus of two sweet, small lakes.
The trail begins on the west side of Mountain Lake and heads north. At a trail junction at the north end of Mountain Lake, keep left to head up to the Twin Lakes. At the three-way junction, continue straight to loop around the small lakes. (A map is definitely helpful here. A state park map is available online.)
After you’ve finished exploring the lakes, continue on the Mount Pickett Trail which eventually climbs up to the top of Mount Pickett (no views, but lovely forest). From here, you’ll head back toward Mountain Lake (use the map to keep you straight at the trail junctions). Eventually you’ll round the bottom of the lake before heading north again to end where you started.
