Hiking Mountain Climbers Trail

The trailhead from the Mountain Climbers Trail is off of the Round the Mountain Trail about 0.1 mile from its east trailhead on the Yakama Nation's Bird Creek Meadows Road. The unsigned trail takes off to the right as the Round the Mountain Trail turns left.

About 1.1 miles along the trail, you will come to the Hellroaring Overlook where Mount Adams reveals itself in all its icy glory! This is dramatic overlook into an enormous canyon is bounded on the opposite side by the serrated Ridge of Wonders. Gazing up the canyon, you will spot Hellroaring Falls cascading off Mazama Glacier on the southeast side of Mount Adams. Looking down the canyon, you will see Hellroaring Meadow and a volcanic cinder cone known as Little Mount Adams at the east end of the Ridge of Wonders.

After the gorgeous viewpoint, the trail continues another approximately 2.3 miles up the mountain to Sunrise Camp on the eastern flanks of Mount Adams. This section of the trail is an unsigned and unmaintained mountain climbers' boot path and poorly defined.

There are established campsites at Sunrise Camp.

WTA Pro Tip: Be sure the Yakama Nation has its Mount Adams Recreation Area open before planning to hike here. Contact Yakama Nation Tribal Forestry at tribalforestry@yakama.com or (509) 865-5121 ext. 4613 for current open dates and fees.

WTA Pro Tip: Save a copy of our directions before you leave! App-based driving directions aren't always accurate and data connections may be unreliable as you drive to the trailhead.

Getting There

From Vancouver, go east on Highway 14 to a bridge across the White Salmon River. Cross it, then take a left turn onto 141A signed for Trout Lake. Highway 141A goes up the hill to a "T" intersection. At the "T", turn left and that puts you on SR 141. Proceed about 20 miles to Trout Lake.

As you enter Trout Lake, at the gas station Y,  take the right turn and head north. At 1.1 miles, stay right at the Y, following the Mount Adams RECREATION AREA/BIRD CREEK MEADOWS sign. Stay on the main paved road.

After 4.3 miles, you enter the Gifford Pinchot National Forest, and a sign informs you that you are on Road 82. At 4.4 miles, the road narrows and turns to gravel, and you come to a three-way fork. Take the middle option. Immediately after this fork, signs confirm you are still on your way to Bird Creek Meadows and you are still on Road 82.

At 10.7 miles you come to an unsigned fork; stay left and drive up the ridge on switchbacks. At 12.9 miles, cross over Bird Creek, passing two gates on the bridge. At 14.7 miles, you come to Mirror Lake; you can see the lake on your left. If you haven't encountered a Yakama Nation Ranger, look for a fee box with envelopes on the right.

Continue straight and after approximately 1.1 miles, you will reach the trailhead on the left for Round the Mountain Trail No. 9. Pit toilets are on the ridge across the road from the trailhead parking.
