Hiking Old Village

The Old Village trail starts in the corner of Maritime Heritage Park near the fish hatchery and leads you northwest through the Lettered Streets neighborhood. The trail itself is paved but closed to cars offering an alternative to sidewalks as you walk through the city.

Just over halfway down the trail, about 0.25 miles into the walk, the trail shifts roughly one city block to the right. Follow the sidewalk to your right before crossing H Street and rejoining the pedestrian and bike path on the other side to finish your walk to Elizabeth Park.

While scenery on the trail is limited to residential and commercial buildings and fairly common city landscaping scenes, there are several historic locations that you’ll pass as you walk including the Pickett House, the oldest house in the city of Bellingham.

Getting There

The trail is located in Bellingham’s Lettered Streets neighborhood located just northwest of the downtown area. The official start is reached by following W Holly St northwest through downtown, then turning right on D St and utilizing the street parking here.

If street parking is occupied and you’re looking to explore a bit further, there is a parking lot available at the nearby Waypoint Park located at 1200 Bay St. From the parking lot, you’ll follow Granary Ave across Roeder Ave. Turn right on Central Ave to Holly St where you’ll turn right once again onto a gravel trail towards Maritime Heritage Park. Once on the gravel trail, follow the path towards the Maritime Heritage Center and the northwest of the park where the Old Village Trail officially starts. Parking in the lot and walking to the start of the trail adds 0.6 miles one way to your hike.
