Owl Mountain is a challenging hike to a remote viewpoint in the far northeast corner of the Kettle River Range. Although open to motorized use, the trail receives light visitation by any user group. The fall hunting season may be the busiest time on this trail, and hikers are advised to be aware of hunting seasons and wear bright colors.

The trail grades are steep and the hike should be considered difficult, but as an area considered for a Potential Wilderness Area by the USFS in 2009, the area holds much of interest to hikers. Lynx, wolverine, and American marten are among the rare species for which this area contains good habitat.

Neither the trail nor the Forest Roads leading to it are well marked or well maintained, so this hike is best for well-prepared and adventurous hikers. High clearance vehicles are recommend to access the trailhead. The driving directions describe access from the east side of the Owl Mountain Trail, although an alternate trailhead is available on the west side of the mountain as well.
