Hiking Pioneer Park Kalispel Heritage Trail

This short, easy trail winds through the forest to the edge of a bluff with a wide view of the Pend Oreille River. A series of artistic signboards provide information about traditional tribal foods, lodging, plants and animals in the Kalispel language, as well as English. The Kalispel Tribe and the US Forest Service are partners in protecting and preserving this heritage trail.

Pioneer Park includes a campground, boat launch, drinking water and picnic tables.

Getting There

From Newport, travel east on U.S. Highway 2 across the Pend Oreille River. Immediately after crossing the bridge, turn left onto LeClerc Road (County Road #9305). Follow LeClerc 2.3 miles north to the park entrance. 

The trailhead is at the first parking area upon entering the park, with a vault toilet and informational kiosk. There is space for about 8 cars.

There is a $10 day-use fee (or season day pass for Colville and Idaho Panhandle).
