Take a short, steep trail to the top of Quartzite Mountain. This highly visible peak overlooks the town of Chewelah along Highway 395. The trailhead is about five miles off Highway 395.
The trail is maintained and goes through wildflower meadows and sparse forest to the meadows on top of the peak. However, due to the steepness of the trail, it might be difficult for very young children.
Wild strawberries ripen in the summer all along the trail, along with lupine blooming. The trail is clearly maintained and easy to follow.
At the top of the peak, there are two firepits, and if you look in the right place you'll find a metal bench placed overlooking the valley. Amazing views.
As the trail is quite steep in places, you should be aware that it might be too steep for some kids or they might get frightened. Kids ages 8 and older who have hiked before are probably best for this trail.
