The Sherman Pass Scenic Byway is a 35-mile stretch of State Route 20 connecting the towns of Republic and Kettle Falls. The high point of this road is Sherman Pass, which at 5,575 feet, is the highest mountain pass in Washington that is maintained year-round.
The drive is beautiful, but to really take in the stunning views, make a stop at Sherman Overlook. The site features a picnic area with a short, accessible scenic trail, as well as a campground.
The start of the paved scenic trail is clearly marked near an information board in the day use area. It leads eastward, looking down on a hairpin bend of Highway 20 and out toward the surrounding peaks. A series of information boards provides facts about forest fires and firefighters.
An interior trail (also paved, but a bit rough) leads to a shelter. The main trail makes a loop that brings you back to the day use area.
