Hiking Squalicum Creek Trail

This wide, relatively flat trail connects the Cornwall Park neighborhood in Bellingham to the Irongate neighborhood, passing Bug Lake and Sunset Pond along the way. It also goes underneath I-5 near the halfway point, and (appropriately) follows Squalicum Creek for its length.

Getting There

Western Trailhead (Orchard Place)

The western trailhead to this trail is on Orchard Pl, between W Orchard Dr and Birchwood Ave. There is street parking here. If heading north on I-5, take exit 256A and turn left onto Meridian St. In 0.3 mile, turn left onto W Orchard Dr. In another 0.3 mile, turn right onto Orchard Pl. Halfway down this block, the trail starts to your left.

This is also an easy spot to reach via public transit. Take Whatcom Transportation Authority route 4 to the Birchwood Ave at Orchard Pl stop. Walk a few hundred feet to the west to Orchard Pl, then turn right. Head up north Orchard Pl halfway up the block — the trail will be to your right.

Central Trailhead (Sunset Pond)

You can also access this trail from Sunset Pond, where there is a small parking lot for about 20 cars. If heading north on I-5, take exit 255. Use the middle lane to turn right onto E Sunset Dr, and take the next left onto James St. Then, take the immediate next left to stay on James St. Continue for 0.4 mile (the road will veer to the right) and turn left onto Woodstock Way. The parking lot will soon be on your right.

This trailhead can be accessed via public transit as well. Take route 232 or 331 to James St at Sunset Pond.
