Hiking Whatcom Creek Trail - West

The westernmost end of the western half of the Whatcom Creek Trail is Maritime Heritage Park, which has a small trail system all on its own. One of its highlights is the Whatcom Creek Fish Ladder — in the fall, when salmon are running, you'll likely find other folks around to watch the bounding fish. The park also features the Maritime Heritage Center, amphitheater, picnic tables, benches and interpretive displays.

If you head out of the park that way — past the fish ladder, up the stairs to the bridge — you'll start along the Whatcom Creek Trail. From here, the trail follows Whatcom Creek, crossing a few roads along the way. Be careful as you cross the street as these are marked but non-lighted mid-block crosswalks.

Note that the section of the Whatcom Creek Trail between Ellis St and I-5 is the sidewalk along the road — east on Kansas St, then east on Meador Ave to I-5.

Wheelchair Accessibility

The large paved trail within Maritime Heritage Park is wide enough for wheelchairs and mostly flat. Most of the gravel trails in the park and the length of the trail outside of the park are likely too narrow and rough for wheelchairs.

Getting There

Driving Directions

Although there are various access points to this trail, one of the easier ones is likely Maritime Heritage Park in downtown Bellingham, which is the southern/western end of the trail.

From downtown Bellingham, head northwest on W Holly St. Turn right onto C St, just past the park. The parking lot will be at the end of the road.

Take Transit

Take Whatcom Transportation Authority route 3 to the Holly St at Central Ave stop. Routes 50 and 232 stop at Champion St at Prospect St, which is only a block away from the park.
