Independence and North Lakes — Saturday, Aug. 8, 2020

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
The Beautiful North Lake

I took up 3 guys on this trip, two of which it was there first time backpacking! It will take you about 15 mins of walking (depending on your speed) to get to the trailhead from the slide(please see photo).  From there it's a mile to Independence Lake and then a good long slog up and down to North Lake (our destination).  It took us 3 hrs with breaks from car to North Lake. I'm sure it can be done faster but it kicked our butts.

The trail is rough, with rocks and boulders and overgrown brush everywhere once you descend to the lake so watch out for your ankles.

Please be aware there are only 4 spots to camp down at the lake, 4 spots. 1 on a giant boulder(where I camped) 1 below that and 2 down by the water. If there are more we didn't see them.

We attempted a summit of Independence Peak but the trail got a little sketchy and I didn't want to risk newbies on it.

I saw a lot of fire rings. As far as I know fires are not allowed up there (4,200'), so please don't chance it and be that idiot who could destroy an otherwise idyllic spot.
