Went out for an easy snowshoe today. We arrived a little before 9am to the Hyak Sno-Park parking lot. There were staff checking for parking passing and selling them to those that didn’t have them. We were told that the sledding hill at Hyak is not yet open, and that the trail has not been groomed.
There were lots of people out and about today. We followed the Palouse-to-Cascades trail from the Sno-Park parking lot. The snow was pretty compact close to the parking lot, but further out on the trail the snowshoes felt more appropriate. There were several signs pointing to side paths for snowshoers. We followed some of these, mostly just wandering our way up the trail. There was one outhouse open along the trail, near the Cold Creek campsites.
There were lots of cross country skiers, so just be mindful to not snowshoe or step where ski tracks have been made. By the time we got back to the parking lot (about 2pm), there were lots and lots of families sledding, and the parking lot was full and blocked from letting more cars in. If you’re going on a weekend, go early!
