Arrived at the trailhead around 9:00 am, hiking by 9:30 am. We hiked along the Lillian Ridge, bypassing the turn for the Grand Pass Trail, and continued on towards Moose Peak. We decided after a light snack not to continue along the ridge and to return to the Grand Pass Trail and descend to Grand Lake directly so we had more time for lunch and fly-fishing.
The trail down to the lakes is in great condition and on this warm Sunday we saw several other hikers though I would not call it crowded. In fact, we had Grand Lake to ourselves, except for one quick visitor, while fly-fished and enjoyed a lakeside lunch & coffee. The horseflies at the lake were awful, swarming us continually.
The fishing was ok. We had heard reports of fish rising constantly which was true when we arrived but the midday sun encouraged the fish to descend to cooler waters and we only brought one small fish to hand. Still a great day though!
The hike out through Badger Valley was stunning. The meadows, frequent small streams, and views made for an enjoy hike even with the steep grades ascending back to Obstruction Point.
We really loved this loop and would highly recommend! More photos and commentary in the link below.
