Issaquah Alps > Tiger Mountain
Before shot with gorgeous maples at the community center. C.W. Schurman

8 of us met at the community center in Issaquah at 8 a.m. to start our hike past the "Jakob Two Trees" public art (troll) by Thomas Dambo, and the high school/dog park, to Tiger Mountain's Poo Poo Point. Rain was forecast for 11 a.m. which, fortunately, was on our way down. There were not many people hiking on an October Friday morning, a few trail runners and people coming up the Chirico Trail.

We were a chatty group; we only heard 9 bird species including brown creepers and varied thrushes. The best fall colors were at the community center where maples are a vibrant red and orange. I'd never seen the troll before, that was a fun photo opp. Our leaders pointed out facts about where the trails go, a huge Douglas fir that stands out among all the others, two trees being undercut by erosion, and why the hike destination was named "Poo Poo" (why not "Choo Choo" if it's the sound trains used to make?) No hang gliders - too rainy? seasonally not available?

The community center was already open at 8 a.m. which made a good restroom stop, and the toilet facilities at the top were also in good condition. I'd been up Poo Poo/Chirico but never this route so it was nice to add to my expanding repertoire. Well done, all!

Maddy on Poo Poo Point

The origin of the name Poo Poo actually came from the whistles used by loggers to communicate with each other. A few years ago I was watching a logging operation at the Talapus lake TH and sure enough the whistle made a distinct poo poo sound. The WTA trail guide erroneously attributes the name to the sound of a train.

Well, I stand corrected! Thanks so much for that clarification, and I won't pass it along any further!
