Trip Report

North Fork Quinault River and Halfway House — Thursday, Jan. 23, 2025

Olympic Peninsula > Pacific Coast
North Fork Ranger Station

We attempted a short day hike out to Wolf Bar but only managed to get in about half way before calling it a day. The trail to Wolf Bar, and presumably beyond, had several obstructions that were wet, slippery, blocking and dangerous to navigate. This is not a hike for children or inexperienced hikers at this time.

We arrived at the trailhead at about noon and ran into a work crew from the Washington State Department of Ecology Conservation Corps. They were gathering at the ONP work crew building for lunch when we arrived and were about to sit down when we encountered them. A brief discussion relayed information that the crew had been clearing roads to the trailhead. It's likely we were the first people to arrive for recreation purposes.

The drive in was beautiful. The road was clear and mostly bare. Signs were obvious of recently cleared timber obstructions and recent DOE operations in multiple locations along the North Shore Road from Bunch Field to the trailhead. (See attached video notebook log). A couple of eagles were seen on the drive in and one small group of elk was seen on the drive out.

At this writing, the bridge between the north and south shores of Lake Quinault is closed for significant repairs. North shore road access is the only way to the trailhead at this time.
