Deschutes Falls Park — Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2025

Olympic Peninsula > Olympia
Panorama from the trail

This was my first visit to Deschutes Falls Park, and the timing (late January) was ideal. Because the ground is so cold, there is hardly any mud. Ice is a major concern along the shaded banks of the river, but the sun had mostly worked its magic by the time we turned back to the trailhead.

Thurston County Parks says the trail is unimproved. I would be careful because it is still very slippery in places (not on the main trail). If I had mobility concerns, I would stick to the main (first) part of the trail, which is in wonderful condition.

The further you go upstream, the quieter and more "unimproved" it gets. That makes it a wonderful experience, in my book. Gorgeous and will definitely look forward to returning in the spring/summer.

Red (volcanic?) rock in the river.
Icicles, moss and beautiful clear water.
First part of trail near the scenic overlook. This part is well maintained.
