Goat Lake — Tuesday, Jul. 8, 2025

North Cascades > Mountain Loop Highway
Upper Waterfall

We left the parking lot at 0845 and arrived at the lake around 1130. We took the lower trail towards the lake and the upper trail on the way back.

The upper trail was in a good condition with only a few fallen trees that we had to go around. This trail is kind of like a roller costar with the way it moves. But overall - there isn't much hard incline. The creek is lovely to follow, and the trees provide coverage from the sun. We stopped at the top of the falls for some photos, and to gape at the view. Once we reached the lake, we went to snag a campsite first. There were three other campsites set up, and by then end of the day there were four. Many day hikers came through. The lake is beautiful; it was my first time going on this hike - and I loved it. I'm going to be back. My group and I went swimming and got slightly burnt in the sun. Towards the evening bugs did come out, but they weren't terrible. We set up camp, ate dinner, hung our food, and went to bed (or if you're like me, read for almost 5 hours).

We left the lake around 1100. We took the upper trail on the way back down. This trail is relatively flat, with very little sun protection. The flatness was perfect for going back to the car since I wanted to avoid any inclines.  Along the way we say a snake in the middle of the trail, beautiful pattern. It was a California Coast Garter Snake. We arrived at the car around 1:30. In the trail logbook someone had sighted a black bear cub on 7/8/25 @ 1435 on the Upper Trail.

I'll be back at this trail for sure.

PETS: The only complaint I have is about pet trail etiquette. I don't mind if people have their dogs off leash if they're trained, but we had one dog that charged at us and kept circling us while barking. It was a medium sized dog. We called out for the owner who we couldn't see. We kept asking for them to reign in their dog. They didn't. The dog then ran off and we saw the owner later. We mentioned about how all dogs were supposed to be on a lease. They were unconcerned.
