Burnt Mountain — Thursday, Jul. 24, 2025

South Cascades > White Pass/Cowlitz River Valley

Before doing this hike, we checked the WTA hiking guide and also All Trails.  WTA said it was 5 miles and 500' gain.  All Trails said 4.2 miles and 994' gain.

We tracked our route and it came to 4.3 miles and 834' gain.  All Trails was much more accurate.  It was 500' gain to the summit, the rest of the gain was on the return.  I think when a hiking guide gives the gain it should include the entire gain, both in and out. Shame on you WTA.

There was a lot of down at the beginning of the hike, some of it on loose rocks. There had been a fire in 2021.  We went through a burned area and then entered some open area, before going into the woods again.  The summit was open and mostly bare. There were lovely views of Mt. Rainier from the summit of Burnt Mt., as well as from the road at the beginning of the trail.

We saw some flowers that we new to us.

Hi Hiking grandma ET, we appreciate you letting us know about the incorrect elevation gain! We did have a mistake there, and we've updated the stats. If you ever see information in our Hiking Guide that looks inaccurate or out-of-date, you can also use the "Update Page" button on each hike (above the Trip Reports section) to let us know something needs to be updated. Looks like you had some lovely weather and your pictures are beautiful; thank you for sharing all about your hike.
