Tatoosh Lakes — Sunday, Sep. 21, 2025

South Cascades > White Pass/Cowlitz River Valley
Tatoosh Lakes from Pt 6050

The drive in was a soggy one! Rain poured most of the morning, but I trusted the forecast calling for a drier afternoon. Luckily, it held true. The road to the trailhead was in good shape overall, with just a few potholes, and fine for any vehicle.

There were only two other cars at the trailhead, both belonging to hunters. I chatted with them briefly on my way up, which was a good reminder: if you’re out this time of year, wear blaze orange or other bright colors. I didn’t see anyone else the rest of the day.

The trail itself was in excellent condition, with fall colors beginning to show and berry bushes still full and ripe. The lakes made for a beautiful (if breezy) lunch stop. Clouds rolled through, obscuring some of the broader views, but the moody atmosphere paired well with the shifting reds and golds of autumn.

After lunch, I headed up to Point 6050 above the lakes. The extra effort rewarded me with sweeping vistas when the clouds broke, plus the quiet satisfaction of having the summit entirely to myself.

Overall: a peaceful shoulder-season hike with vibrant colors, plentiful berries, and a taste of solitude in the Tatoosh.
