Trip Report

Fort Flagler State Park — Saturday, Jan. 10, 2026

Olympic Peninsula > Hood Canal
Searchlights were run out on rails to the edge of the bluff to illuminate a target.

Off the beaten track, and so worth it!  Even on a Saturday, I felt completely alone most of the time.  I parked at the boat launch, hiked the Bluff Trail (A) eastbound to the former lighthouse, then back westbound along the beach.  Tides permitting, this is the best way to sample the park, about 5 miles round trip.

Kudos to State Parks, who keep this park in beautiful condition.  I always see rangers here, usually hard at work.  In a state full of beautiful state parks, this one is one of the crown jewels for sure.

The spooky underground ammo magazines and tunnels are perfect for kids about 9 and up.  Younger ones will need more supervision around the old gun batteries, since they feature concrete stairways and pits with no handrails.

Beautiful views of the Sound, Olympics, and Cascades.  And solitude!  Especially on the beach.

(Sorry, folks.  Not sure why this website keeps rotating my photos.)

Spotters in this fire control station would send bearing and range information on illuminated targets to the gun battery captains.
One of the many gun batteries. All of this to repel an enemy that never arrived.

I find that when the system rotates my photo, it’s because the photo is bigger than 5 MB. If by any chance you’re using a cell phone, I think because of how they compress photos, it might be under 5 MB on your phone but becomes true size when you upload it. So I always fix this issue on my end by replacing the photo with a reduced size (lower resolution) version. Hope that works for you too.
