WTA featured the Alpine Lakes High Camp in the magazine recently. So we went with our dog and day hiked to Lake Ethel from the Camp. It took about 2 1/2 hours of hiking on road initially, then the trail. The trail goes down to a stream, then switchbacks up a ridge, traverses around the ridge and then down to the lake. Good huckleberries along the way. Great camp spot at Lake Ethel for a picnic or an overnight camp. About 1000' elevation gain to Lake and 500' gain back. Lake Ethel can be hiked from US 2 if you are not staying at the Camp.
