I started my morning by riding my bike 10 miles up to Klapatche Point to do some star gazing. Most stars I have seen anywhere in the park!
After a half hour of stargazing and catching my breath from the bike ride, I locked up my bike at the North Puyallup TH. This is the northern most accessible trail on Westside Rd. I then walked a mile south to the Klapatche Creek TH to do a mini loop on the Westside Rd.
Even though the stats don’t look all that demanding, I always find the Klapatche Creek trail a workout. It seems like a steady non forgiving climb up to St Andrew’s Lake.
I enjoyed breakfast and sunrise at St Andrews Lake in total solitude.
I then headed back down to the WT (Wonderland Trail) to connect with the North Puyallup trail.
The Klapatche park bear was out eating breakfast in the identical spot I see him every time I am on this trail in the morning. I guess we are all creatures of habit.
This section of the WT is a steep decline if heading north. A STEEP incline if heading south. I saw three groups of folks doing the full WT circuit heading south, CCW. Tried to give them encouragement as they climbed one of the steepest sections of the WT in the heat.
Once I hit the North Puyallup trail, trail conditions change dramatically. It is a trail that has hardly been used since the closing of Westside Rd. It is really cool to see the old rock walls built that are all moss covered. A ton of wildlife scat of all varieties. Wildlife has learned where the people are not.
Great morning of stargazing and exploring some lesser traveled trails in the park!

Really looking forward to seeing this area when I do the WT in September. Have never seen the trail between Pyramid Creek and Mowich.

Great report and photos. Love the reflection in the first one. Interesting about the stars. I convinced one of my neighbors to go with me to the highest point in Redmond this morning at 4:00 AM to watch the Perseid show. While we were doing that he commented on how many stars were visible and he was right. I haven't seen the sky looking like that in an urban setting for a long time. Steve R.

Hey Steve, That is really cool you found a local spot for stargazing! Definitely much easier than a 10 mile FS road bike ride. 😊 The density of stars is incredible right now. I found the density of stars more stunning than the Persaid meteor shower. Afterall, even at its peak, there is maybe a meteor per minute. Hope you back is recovering well!

Hi Mary, thanks for asking about my back. It's slowly getting better. My doctor told me to cut back to one hike a week and make them shorter with not as much elevation gain, so I've been going out on Saturdays in the Issaquah Alps. My sidekick Jeno has graciously gone with me every time which I appreciate. I am hoping to get the ok to hike more often and on longer and tougher trails by the end of the month. Fingers crossed. SR

Nice! George did this as a day hike last year, and he wonders why his hiking shoes wear out so soon. My only hope is my wife getting me a e-bike for Christmas.

Hope you get that e-bike! Would open the entire Westside Rd for hiking with ease!
