It is the time of year for family gatherings, whether it’s out-of town visitors, college kids home for winter break, or simply time together while schools are closed. For some, it’s a hectic rush and for others the days may seem endless. Making meaningful memories together can be a challenge — but why not start a new tradition this winter? Join a WTA trail work party!

Whether your family is looking to enjoy nature, work side by side, or participate in a shared project but tackle tasks independently — we’ve got you covered. We have a variety of trail work parties to suit your family including locations that are easy to get to, including by public transit. No experience is required and youth ages 10 and up can join any of our day work parties. (Those under 14 need to join with a parent/guardian.)

WTA crew leader Kaci Darsow has worked with countless families over the years. “What’s cool about our work parties is that there’s something for everyone,” Kaci said. They enjoy seeing families volunteer together and notices how “each family member expresses themselves — with so many different tasks and facets of trailwork families can choose to work together or explore different activities.”

Neil Gavin is a volunteer who regularly joins with his family. “I absolutely love watching my children Alex and Eli learn new skills and gain confidence on trails. Volunteering as a family lets us work together toward a common goal and be a part of something bigger,” he said. It's a powerful way for families to connect while contributing to the trails we all love.

If you are interested in starting a new tradition for your family, here are a few tips to get you started.

1

Pick the right work party

Choose a work party that suits everyone — read the hike description and the work plan to get the details you need to make a good choice. We have a great variety of winter work party options near town centers. A lot of those will have short walks to the work site.

2

leave room to be surprised

Kaci’s biggest piece of advice to families coming out on trail. “Let family members try new things, even if they struggle — they’ll surprise you and themselves,” they said.

3

Be prepared

Bring enough layers and snacks for the whole family. Remember that you might split up during the day, so each person should have their own gear and food available. We’ll provide you with a hard hat and gloves if you don’t have your own.

4

Treat yourself

Warm and tasty treats, like hot cocoa in a thermos, make lunch extra fun.

5

for the end of the day

Pack essentials like plastic bags for muddy boots and towels to cover car seats on the way home. A change of clothes can be nice, too.
