A New Look for Spring

Posted by Loren Drummond at Mar 14, 2017 05:07 PM |

We've made a few updates to wta.org this week. Take a look at what we changed, and let us know what you think.

You may have noticed that wta.org has a new look for spring. We've made a few updates to the site this week. Here are a few of the key features we've made changes to:

More responsive: Using technology to reduce barriers and help improve access to trails for more people is a goal of our strategic plan. And that means more than just having a terrific mobile app. It means that we want to continue improving the mobile responsiveness of wta.org so that you can easily find your next hike or work party on your phone, tablet or desktop.

Simplified navigation: We've rearranged to make the site easier to read and use. Explore a bit. You might discover something new about the hiking community or how you can support our work to protect trails.

New features: We've improved our hiking guide and trip report search functionality and added a few new features, like being able to check the weather on a hike with a single click.

Goodbye, Hike of the Week: We also retired a feature near and dear to our hearts. This week, we said goodbye to the Hike of the Week. Sometimes posting a single hike on social media puts too much pressure on just one place. But with well over 5,000 trails in Washington (3,000+ of which are covered in our hiking guide) there is always an amazing adventure at your fingertips.

So here are our tips for finding the perfect hike for your week:

    • Step one: Explore recent trip reports for inspiration from other hikers.
    • Step two: Research the weather and current conditions on trails that you are interested in.
    • Still stumped? Check out our seasonal recommendations or archives of locations featured in past years in the Hike of the Week archive. Talk to your land managers. They are a wealth of information and are always generous with recommendations.
    • Go hiking! And then post a trip report so you can help the next person creating their own adventure.

help us continue to improve the site

The truth is that wta.org belongs to you, the hiking community.

Your passion for trails, for trip reports and for keeping each other informed and safe is what makes wta.org such a great resource. Your ideas and feedback help us improve the site to meet your needs. And your donations and memberships pay for our investments and upgrades.

So please, tell us what you think. We are already thinking what we want to improve next. If you want to support and help improve the resource you use to find hikes, please consider becoming a member.

I didn't see the photo gallery listed. I hope you don't discontinue that feature. I enjoyed seeing other hikers pictures and it was fun posting some of mine.

Thanks! Yes, the photo gallery will continue to exist, but we hit a few snags when we refreshed it. I'll be sure to share it's new location when we release the fixes for it.

Since the trend now is to tint vehicle windows, my member clings don't hardly show. Is there a plan to offer vinyl stickers that would attach to the outside of a window?

Hi raindodger! We ran a poll in our Hike-a-Thon facebook group to decide if folks wanted a a window cling or a decal. Most folks wanted a window cling it seems, but we are keeping track of requests for decals for future orders.

Girl and Dog on A New Look for Spring

Well done, Team WTA! I love the look, the responsiveness, and the big photos on the trip reports -- outstanding! Also like the ability to sort trip reports by most recently submitted.

One Feature Request for you: it'd be great to "favorite" report authors and have some kind of sorting to see recent reports by favorites.

Thanks for all your good work!

Looks great! Any chance you could fix the bug where when you submit a new trip report, the second "additional link" is lost? (You can still add it by going back and editing the trip report and adding the link again, but it's a bit tedious...)

If you had a $hop offering relevant WTA apparel, I bet people would $hop happily. $ell it, and people will give WTA money. :-)
